Highest Yoga Tantra

Of the three types of Buddhist practitioner, those of greatest capacity become determined to achieve Buddhahood in order to liberate all sentient beings from suffering. These practitioners of the Great Vehicle follow either the Perfection Vehicle, which teaches paths found in sutras, or the Secret Mantra Vehicle, which teaches paths found in the tantras as well as those common to both sutra and tantra. Those who follow the Secret mantra vehicle seek the quickest way to attain Buddhahood in order to benefit other sentient beings as soon as possible.

The Yamantaka (Solitary Realizer) Initiation that His Holiness Dalai Lama will confer in Long Beach on April 20-21, 2012 is a Secret Mantra empowerment of the highest class known as "Highest Yoga Tantra". Yamantaka is a wrathful expression of Manjushri, the wisdom deity. Taking such an empowerment of Highest Yoga Tantra is a serious step involving a number of life-long commitments. Those who receive such a high level of initiation promise the Vajra Master (His Holiness) that they will abide by all the vows and pledges required by the Vajra Master.

Vows: Before receiving the initiation one must take the bodhisattva vows and the tantric vows as a life-long undertaking.

Pledges: For this initiation there will be three pledges:

  1. Six Session Guru Yoga- three times in the morning and three times in the evening every day for the rest of your life. This prayer comes in two versions: long (7 pages) and short (2 pages), and you may choose either one depending on how much time you have.
  2. Solitary Yamantaka Sadhana- once daily for the rest of your life. This is available in two versions: long (40 pages) and short (9 pages). You may choose either one depending on how much time you have.
  3. Solitary Yamantaka Retreat to be done at least once in your life. The standard  retreat takes roughly 3-4 weeks during which time one completes 4 sessions of meditation and recitation of the long (40 page) sadhana daily while incorporating recitations of the main Deity mantra and each of the four other secondary mantras. Completing the 100,000 recitations of the main Deity mantra and 10,000 recitations each of four other secondary mantras marks the completion of the retreat. The completion of the retreat should be followed by a fire puja. (Please consult your Guru for more guidance on your retreat.)
